QR ordering for cafés: what to set up first
QR ordering can save staff time and reduce mistakes. Here is what to set up first so it works well from day one.

With QR ordering, customers scan a code at the table, choose from the menu on their phone, and send the order. Done well, it saves staff time and cuts order mistakes. Done badly, it confuses customers. Here is what to set up first.
1. A clear, short menu
On a phone, long menus are hard to read. Group items well. Use short names. Add a photo for your best sellers. Remove items you often run out of.
2. Options and extras
Set up the choices people really ask for: milk type, size, extra shot, no onion. Clear options mean fewer questions at the table and fewer remade dishes.
3. Send orders straight to the kitchen
QR orders should go straight to the kitchen screen or printer, the same as counter orders. If a staff member has to type them again, you lose most of the benefit.
4. Table numbers that make sense
Each QR code should know its table. Check that the table numbers on the codes match the numbers your staff use.
5. Decide how people pay
Choose if customers pay when they order, or at the counter at the end. Paying first is simpler for staff. Paying later can suit longer dining.
6. Test it like a customer
Before launch, ask a few staff to order from their own phones, at different tables, at a busy time. Fix what confuses them.
